?? on the children of JAMES B. and MARY CATHERINE (MAXWELL) ALEXANDER

Many sources show the following children of James and Mary (Maxwell) Alexander:  William (emigrant from Scotland/Ireland) b. ~1648 m. Araminta Liston; 
Elizabeth (emigrant from Scotland/Ireland) b. ~1650 m. Matthew Wallace; 
James B. Alexander (emigrant from Scotland/Ireland) b. ~1652 m. Mary Steele.  
Andrew m. Anne Taylor. 
Francis m. Rebecca Alexander 
John 
Samuel m. Mary Taylor 
Joseph m. Abigail McKnight/McKnitt
Jane. 
All were said to have settled in Cecil, MD.   HOWEVER, there is reason to believe that the above children were not offspring of James and Mary (Maxwell) Alexander, according to some caveats I have run across:  

Janice McAlpine`s AWTP Post-em has placed the following information on several sites:
(Quote) Even though there are many family trees that show James Alexander and Mary Maxwell in Ireland and then their children in Maryland, I suspect at least two different Alexander families have been mixed together. You might want to take a look at “History of the county of Ayr : with a genealogical account of the families of Ayrshire,” James Paterson, Ayr, J. Dick, 1847- 1852. (Online)
Page 510 is about Robert Alexander, of Blackhouse and Boghall, who married Marion Hamilton. Their son James Alexander married Mary Maxwell, daughter of John Maxwell of Southbar, with a marriage contract dated 9 June 1657.
According to the history, James Alexander was heir to Robert Alexander`s property at Blackhouse and Boghall. James Alexander was among the “outed” ministers in 1662, but he did not move to Ireland. He died after 5 March 1686, still in Ayr, Scotland. James and Mary had 4 children:
1. Robert, born about 1658, d. 1723 in Ayr, Scotland. He married Sophia Blair.
2. John, born about 1660, was a merchant in Glasgow, and died in 1712 in Glasgow, Scotland. He married, about 1690, Janet Cuninghame, a daughter of the Laird of Craigends
3. Anna, married to Peter Murdoch, merchant, and Provost of Edinburgh (his second wife.)
4. Jean, married to William Greenlies of Auchlamont (Paisley parish) writer in Ayr. Contract dated 24th August 1689.
Clearly, if the above information is accurate, and it appears to be, James Alexander and Mary Maxwell never moved to Ireland and were not the parents of the children you have listed for them. (UNQUOTE)

Then, there is the following narrative, which does indicate James was in Ireland but his brother William may have been father of the “7 sons and 2 daughters”:

“There is some debate about who is the father (James or brother William) who is the father of 7 sons and 2 daughters who left Ireland for America on the ship `Welcom” which landed on Sept. 21, 1670.:
“The Clark-Alexander Connection” by Lt Col Victor E Clark, Jr USAF (Ret), Argyll Colony Plus, Vol 9 No 3, November1995 pg 183 Colonial records of both Maryland and Virginia show that Alexanders were present before 1700. Rev Alexander was a member of the Laggan Presbytery in 1680. Several other ministers from this organization came to America. Gives birth years of the seven sons – these are attributed to Rev James Alexander by tradition, not by proof. Many Scotch people had been brought to northern Ireland (Ulster Plantation) – when they came to America they were often referrd to as Irish or Scotch-Irish, but still held the Scottish traditions. pg 184 IN 1683 a section of land in Maryland was surveyed which later became New Munster, Cecil County – some settlers were mentioned, several of whom were Alexanders.”

So, while it is possible that the children being attributed to James and Mary (including William, Matthew, and Elizabeth) really were offspring of his brother William, I have not found any evidence to confirm yet.
Therefore, I am keeping James and Mary (Maxwell) Alexander here for now with the above caveats for informational purposes until I am able to post the appropriate lineage for this family group (vjb 2011)

Baron is a title of nobility. The word baron comes from Old French baron, itself from Old High German and Latin (liber) baro meaning “(free) man, (free) warrior”; it merged with cognate Old English beorn meaning “nobleman.

Baronet/Lady: A minor Baron but senior to a knight.  The wife of a baronet is called Lady (surname). If a woman succeeds to a baronetcy (there are only about four baronetcies which can be held by women in their own right), then she is a baronetess, Dame (forename surname).

Duke:

“A dukedom is the highest non-royal title in the British peerage. Dukes are technically ‘princes’ and although at first sight it seems that in this country a prince is higher in rank, it must be remembered that Royal children are born princes but are raised to the rank of Duke, there being a number of dukedoms used exclusively by royalty – Edinburgh, York, Gloucester, Kent, Sussex and Clarence being examples. “

Earl:

Laird versus Lord:

• “A Lord is a member of the titled aristocracy,a peer member who can run for a seat in Parliament in the House of Lords.A Lord can be a Marquess,Earl,Viscount or Baron.
• The ‘title’ of Laird is a ‘corporeal hereditament’ (an inheritable property that has an explicit tie to the physical land), i.e. the title can not be held and cannot be bought and sold without selling the physical land. A Laird is said to hold a Lairdship. A woman who holds a Lairdship in her own right is styled with the honorific Lady.  Though translated as Lord and signifying the same, Laird is not a title of nobility.

Landgrave: 

A title of nobility in Germany and Scandinavia, dating from the 12th century, when the kings of Germany attempted to strengthen their position in relation to that of the dukes (Herzoge). The kings set up “provincial counts” (Landgrafen) over whom the dukes would have no control and who would have rank and authority equivalent to those of dukes. Later—and more commonly—the title was given to counts in order to make them directly dependent on the king (or emperor).

Margrave/Margraf

A Margrave or Margraf was the “(L)ord or military governor of a medieval German border province. 2) Used as a hereditary title for certain princes in the Holy Roman Empire.”

Marquis/Marquess

A marquess or marquis is a nobleman of hereditary rank in various European monarchies and some of their colonies. The term is also used to render equivalent oriental styles as in imperial China and Japan. In the British peerage it ranks below a duke and above an earl (see Marquesses in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth). In Europe it is usually equivalent where a cognate title exists. A woman with the rank of marquess, or the wife of a marquess, is a marchioness (in British usage), or a marquise.

mtDNA Information:

My tested mtDNA came back J* so my mom’s female line would be in that category, which I understand would be be the mtDNA of all female offspring of that line.  MtDNA testing is used only to trace the female lineages.

J*  Specific mitochondrial haplogroups are typically found in different regions of the world, and this is due to unique population histories. In the process of spreading around the world, many populations—with their special mitochondrial haplogroups—became isolated, and specific haplogroups concentrated in geographic regions. Today, we have identified certain haplogroups that originated in Africa, Europe, Asia, the islands of the Pacific, the Americas, and even particular ethnic groups. Of course, haplogroups that are specific to one region are sometimes found in another, but this is due to recent migration.The mitochondrial haplogroup J contains several sub-lineages. The original haplogroup J originated in the Near East approximately 50,000 years ago. Within Europe, sub-lineages of haplogroup J have distinct and interesting distributions. Haplogroup J*—the root lineage of haplogroup J—is found distributed throughout Europe, but at a relatively low frequency. Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b

R1b probably arrived in Spain from the east 30,000 years ago among the paleolithic or “old stone age” peoples considered to be aboriginal to Europe. It is believed that everyone who is R1b is a descendant in the male line from an individual knows as ‘the patriarch’ (Bryan Sykes named this group ‘Oisin’ in his DNA book ‘Blood of the Isles’) since his descendants account for over 40% of all the chromosomes in Europe. This haplogroup is characteristic of the Basques who language is probably that of the first R1b, and who are genetically the closest to the original R1b population which probably amounted to only a few thousand individuals.
